What are the two families of signals?
Stop signal and a distant signal
What is a stop signal?
A stop signal is a signal that can display a stop aspect or indication
You must stop at a stop signal when it displays a red aspect
What is a distant signal?
A distant signal is a signal that cannot display a stop aspect or indication
A distant signal can only display a proceed or proceed with caution
How can you identify a distant signal?
A distant signal can be identified by either an R at the bottom of the identification plate or a solid triangle at the top
What is a controlled signal?
A signal operated by the signaller
Where would you see a controlled signal?
Controlled signals are normally placed at areas that are dangerous, such as junctions, entrances/exits of stations, and loops
How can you identify a controlled signal?
What is an automatic signal?
A signal operated by the passage of trains
How can you identify an automatic signal?
It has a rectangular white plate with a black stripe through it above the normal signal ID plate
What is a semi-automatic signal?
A signal normally operated by the passage of trains but can also be controlled from a signal box or a ground frame
How can you identify a semi-automatic signal?
What is a 2 State Banner Repeater?
Banner repeating signals are provided on the approach to certain signals that have restricted sighting to give advanced information of the signsl aspect
How can you identify a 2 State Banner Repeater?
It will have BR written at the bottom of the ID plate

What is a 3 State Banner Repeater?
3 State Banner repeaters can show 3 indications
