Shock Flashcards
What is Decompensated shock
Characterized by low BP and altered LOC
Weak thready pulse
Ashy cyanotic
Dilated pupils
What is compensated shock?
Your body reacting and trying to fix it.
Slight mental status changes
Anxiety feeling of doom
Increased HR and Resp
Delayed cap refill
Diaphoresis
What is irreversible shock?
Organ system beginning to shut down
ALS
CPR
ABC’s
What is septic shock?
A body infection causing systemic inflammation
Altered LOC
Cold clammy pale skin
Vomiting
Diarrhea
What is hypovolemic shock? (Volume problem)
Low blood volume, blood list from cardiovascular system
Severe bleeding
Dehydration from diarrhea vomiting
What is distributive shock? (Tube problem)
Smooth muscles in vessels lose ability to maintain normal diameter
Anaphylaxis or sepsis can cause vessels to dilate
What is cardiogenic shock? (Pump problem)
Heart fails at its ability to pump blood
Myocardial infarction
Trauma/heart damage
What is obstructive shock?
Blood is prevented from flowing
Embolism
Pneumothorax
Large quantity of blood can’t reach vital organs
How do you treat shock?
Stop whatever is causing it
Initiate transport
Manage airway
Prevent heat loss
Consider ALS
What is vasoconstriction?
Narrowing of blood vessel diameter
Moves blood to bigger vessels to maintain flow to vital organs
What is perfusion
The delivery of oxygen and nutrients to cells and waste removal
Describe Arterial bleeding
Spurting
Pulsating flow
Bright red
Explain vein bleeding
Steady slow flow
Dark red
Explain capillary bleeding
Slow even flow
Skin surface bleed
Contains plasma
Arteries carry what kind of blood ?
Oxygenated blood
Veins carry what kind of blood?
Deoxygenated blood
Pulmonary arteries carry what kind of blood from the heart to the lungs?
Deoxygenated blood
Pulmonary veins carry what kind of blood from the lungs to the heart?
Oxygenated blood
What is class 1 hemmorage
Body is still able to compensate
Blood loss up to 750ml
What is class 2 hemorrhage?
Mildly anxious
Increased resp and pulse
Body still compensates
Blood loss up to 1500ml
What is class 3 hemmorage?
Anxious
Confused
Increased resp pulse
Low BP
Cool pale diaphoretic
Blood loss up to 2000ml
Decompensation setting in
What is class 4 hemorrhage?
Loss of consciousness
Extreme low BP
Irreversible shock setting in
Greater than 2000ml blood loss
What is resp dysfunction? (Think about your lungs and breathing)
Disruption of resp control
Disruption of pressure
Disruption of lung tissue
What is cardiac dysfunction?
Mechanical..physical trauma and loss of cardiac muscle
Electrical…result of heart attack/failure
Arrhythmia then causes too fast too slow or unorganized heart rate
