shaping materials - power and machine tools Flashcards
1
Q
what safety measures need to be taken when using power and machine tools
A
- do a visual check check for any loose connection, run your hand along the lead to check for any cuts in the insulation
- you can an RCD to help prevent electric shocks
- wear a mask or fit an extraction hose if the tools gonna produce a lot of dust
- wear safety glasses
- clamp your work down firmly so it can’t slip or move
- make sure u know where the stop buttons are before you start
- make sure the tool has stopped moving before u put it down
2
Q
what do RCDs do
A
if you accidentally cut through the lead of the power tool, the RCD cuts off the electricity supply straight away
3
Q
features of hand held routers
A
- used to make features like slots, grooves and fancy edges
- usually used with a fence
4
Q
features of planer
A
- used like a beach plane to remove shavings of wood
- takes much less effort and is much faster than a bench plane
- not as accurate as a bench plane
5
Q
features of a jigsaw
A
- has interchangeable blades and variable speeds
- slow
- can make straight or curved cuts in all materials
6
Q
features of electric power sanders
A
- can be used to smooth wood
- they work by moving abrasive paper at high speeds
- quicker and easier than sanding by hand
7
Q
features of machine tools
A
- generally do the same jobs as power tools but are often more accurate and better suited to bigger tasks
- usually stationary, often bolted to the workbench or the floor
8
Q
features of a sanding disk
A
- spins a disk of abrasive paper
- used for accurately removing material to a line
9
Q
features of a saw bench
A
- has a circular blade
- cuts wood and boards like plywood
- makes straight cuts only
10
Q
features of a band saw
A
- has a blade in a long flexible loop
- usually used to cut wood
11
Q
features of a pillar drill
A
- used to make round holes
- can be used on all kinds of material, depending on the drill bit
12
Q
features of fences
A
- attached to power and machine tools to help guide either the tool or material
- they can be set up to repeat the same action over and over again, ensuring consistency between the products in a batch
