Shapes of molecules Flashcards
1
Q
How do you know what shape the simple covalent molecule is?
A
The shape of simple covalent molecules depends on the number of bonds and the orientation of these bonds around the central atom.
2
Q
What are the four shapes of covalent molecules called?
A
Linear
Angular
Trigonal pyramidal
Tetrahedral
3
Q
For angular, trigonal pyramidal and tetrahedral molecules, what does it mean when the central atoms lie in the same group?
A
If the central atoms lie in the same group, they have the same shape. e.g. carbon and silicon both lie in group 4 so they both have 4 outer electrons. This means when they are bonded to the same type of atoms, they will have the same shape.
