Covalent network substances Flashcards
What is a covalent network substance?
A covalent network consists of a giant 3 dimensional network of atoms joined together by strong covalent bonds.
Do covalent network substances have high or low melting points?
Covalent networks have very high melting points because lots of energy is needed to break the strong covalent bonds between the atoms in the network.
What are the three covalent network elements?
Boron,carbon and silicon.
What are the two covalent network compounds?
Silicon dioxide and silicon carbide.
What is a diamond?
Diamond is a form of the element carbon.
What is a diamond made of?
It is made of carbon atoms joined to other carbon atoms by 4 strong covalent bonds in a giant 3 dimensional network. Diamond is a giant network of carbon atoms.
