Periodic Table Flashcards
What side of the zigzag line on the periodic table do metals lie?
The metals lie at the left hand side of the periodic table.
What side of the zigzag line on the periodic table do non metals lie?
The non metals lie on the right side of the periodic table.
What are the rows on the periodic table called?
periods.
What do the elements of each group have the same number of and what is it indicated by?
The elements of each group have the same number of outer electrons and are indicated by group number.
What is the group which does not have the same number of outer electrons as the group number.
group 0 which has 8 outer electrons.
What non metal sits above lithium in the periodic table and why?
Hydrogen because it only has one electron.
Name and describe the group 1 elements.
The group 1 metals are called the alkali metals. They are stored under oil because they are so reactive. They react violently with water releasing hydrogen gas. Each alkali metal has one outer electron in its outer energy level.
Name and describe the group 7 elements.
The group 7 metals are called the halogens. They are very reactive non metals. Each halogen has 7 electrons in the outer energy level.
Name and describe the group 0 elements.
The group 0 elements are called the noble gases. They are very unreactive non-metals. Each noble gas has 8 electrons in the outer energy level. it used to be called group 8 but is often called 0 due to the lack of reactivity of the elements gives the a valency of zero.
What element group is labelled as monatomic and what does it mean?
Group 0 or the noble gases is labelled as monatomic which means they exist as single atoms not bonded with each other.
Name and describe the middle block elements (between group 2 and 3)
The middle block elements are called the transition metals. Many of these are used as catalysts.
