Covalent molecular substances Flashcards
What are the two different types of covalent substances?
Covalent molecular substances - discrete molecular
Covalent networks - giant networks
What are covalent molecular substances made up of?
covalent molecular substances are made up of molecules joined together, in the liquid and solid states, by weak forces of attraction called Van der Waals forces.
What is broken during melting and boiling points?
During melting and boiling it is only the weak forces of attraction that are broken.
Why do covalent molecular substances have low melting and boiling points?
The process requires very little energy.
what do the solid lines represent?
The solid lines represent the strong covalent bonds between the atoms within the molecules.
what do the dotted lines represent?
The dotted lines represent the weak forces of attraction(van der waals) between the molecules.
What structure has a low melting/ boiling point?
Any substance with a low melting/ boiling point has a covalent molecular structure.
