Ions Flashcards
What is an Ion?
An ion is a charged atom.
How is an Ion formed?
They are formed when atoms gain or lose electrons.
How can you determine how many electrons are gained/lost?
To determine how many electrons are gained/lost you can use the electron arrangements in the data booklet, page six.
Why do atoms form ions?
Atoms form ions in order to achieve a stable electron arrangement like the nearest noble gas which means they will have a full outer energy level of electrons.
Do metals lose or gain electrons and why?
Metal atoms lose electrons to form positively charged ions with a stable electron arrangement.
Do non metals gain or lose electrons?
Non metals gain electrons to form negatively charged atoms.
What is found on the top right of an ion symbol?
The charge of an atom.
If the charge is + do you lose or gain electrons?
It has lost electrons.
If the charge is - do you lose or gain electrons?
it has gained electrons.
