Sexual disorders Flashcards
Sexual dysfunction
Find it difficult to function adequately while having sex, e.g. may not become aroused or achieve orgasm. May occur in both heterosexual and homosexual relations.
Paraphilic disorders
Sexual deviation, sexual arousal occurs primarily in the context of inappropriate objects or individuals. E.g. attraction towards anyone other than a fellow adult, e.g. children or animals.
Heterosexual behaviour
Sex with opposite gender.
Homosexual behaviour
Sex with the same gender.
Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (male) Sexual interest arousal disorder (female)
Here individuals have little or no interest in any type of sexual activity. It is difficult to assess low sexual desire, and a great deal of clinical judgment is required.
Erectile disorder
Males with problems in becoming physically aroused.
Orgasm disorder
Inability to reach orgasm, despite adequate sexual desire and arousal.
Sexual pain disorder/genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder
(Female specific). Pain during attempted intercourse is so severe that sexual behaviour is disrupted. Severe anxiety or panic attacks may occur during attempted intercourse, this suggests a possible psycho-somatic explanation.
How to assess sexual behaviour?
- Clinicians conduct interviews.
- Medical examination (usually urologist or gynaecologist).
- Psychophysiological assessment
Causes of sexual disorders?
- Beta-blockers medication (can cause sexual dysfunction).
- Neurological diseases.
- Chronic illness.
- Psychological–> Trauma?.
- Cultural (E.g. learning early about sexuality in as a negative thing –> religious communities).
- Social factors.
Treatment of sexual dysfunction
- Psychosocial treatments.
- Medical treatments.
Types of paraphilic disorders
- Fetishistic disorder (e.g. sexually aroused by feet).
- Exhibitionistic disorders (exposing genitals to strangers).
- Transvestic disorder
Sadism/masochism
Inflicting pain or humiliation (Sadism) or suffering pain or humiliation (masochism) and becoming sexually aroused is associated with violence and injury in these conditions.
Sadistic rape
When the sexual act is not mutually agreed upon (rather forced upon). Many rapists meet criteria for antisocial personality disorder.
Pedophilia
Sexual attraction to children (aged 13 or younger).
