What is a psychotic disorder?
Term used to characterise many unusual behaviours, although in its strictest sense it usually involves delusions and/or hallucinations (sensory experiences in the absence of external events).
Schizophrenia
Characterised by a broad spectrum of cognitive and emotional dysfunctions including delusions and hallucinations, disorganized speech and behaviour, and inappropriate emotions.
Positive symptoms of schizophrenia
Delusions and Hallucinations.
Negative symptoms of schizophrenia
- Avolition/apathy (inability to initiate and persist in activities).
- Alogia (relative absence of speech).
- Anhedonia (lack of pleasure), affective flattening.
Disorganised symptoms of schizophrenia
- Disorganised speech.
- Inappropriate affect and disorganised behaviour (E.g. laughing or crying at improper times).
Other psychotic disorders (other than schizophrenia)
- Schizoaffective disorder
- Schizophreniform disorder
- Delusional disorder
- Brief psychotic disorder
- Attenuated psychosis syndrome
