What type of disorders are included in Cluster A of personality disorders?
Paranoid, schizotypical and schizoid personality disorders.
What type of disorders are included in Cluster B of personality disorders?
Histrionic, narcissistic, borderline and antisocial perosnality disorders.
What type of disorders are included in Cluster C of personality disorders?
Avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive personality disorders.
Paranoid personality disorder
“I cannot trust others”, often left isolated because they accuse close ones. Great mistrust.
Schizotypical personality disorder
“It’s better to be isolated”. Isolated from others, often considered odd/bizarre by others. Closely related to schizophrenia.
Schizoid personality disorder
“Relationships are messy and undesirable”. Isolated, do not enjoy any relationships, romantic or sexual. Have few if any interests.
Narcissistic personality disorder
“Since I am special, I deserve special rules”. Someone who thinks extremely highly of themselves (often exaggerating their abilities). Preoccupied with themselves. Lack sensitivity and compassion for other people. need special attention “e.g. the best table at the restaurant” or illegal parking space in front of the restaurant.
Borderline personality disorder
Mood and relationships are unstable. Usually, have a poor self-image, tend to self-harm high risk of suicide. Lacks control over their emotions, may, therefore, seem intense (goes from anger to deep depression in a short amount of time). Among the most common types.
Antisocial personality disorder
“I am entitled to break rules”. These individuals perform actions most of us would find unacceptable such as stealing from close family or friends. Psychopathy is a subgroup to antisocial PD. Show no regret for their behaviours, manipulative and superficial charm.
Histrionic personality disorder
These individuals tend to be overly dramatic (often seem to be almost acting). Often disorganised, unstable life situation (e.g. changing partners frequently, trouble keeping promises about plans etc). Likes to be the centre of attention.
Avoidant personality disorder
“If people knew the real me, they will reject me”. incredibly sensitive to other people’s opinions. Desire social relationships, but seldom pursue them unless they know they will be liked. Low self-esteem and fear of rejection.
Dependent personality disorder
“I need people to survive, to be happy”Submissive to others even when own opinion is different.
Their desire to maintain relationships may lead to other behavioural characteristics. Sensitive to criticism, need for reassurance. “clinging”:
Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder
People who have this disorder are fixating on things being done the right way. Tend to have poor interpersonal relationships.
