What does clinical psychology entail?
Clinical psych is the psychological speciality that provides continuing and comprehensive mental and behavioural health care for individuals and families –> consultation to agencies and communities.
Research based practice.
What is abnormal?
- behaviour that is deviant from the way people normally act/behave.
- Whether or not a person function or not in society.
- Deviation from the statistical norm.
- Deviation from the social norms.
- Maladaptive behaviour.
- Distress and impairment.
What is a psychological disorder?
A psychological dysfunction within an individual that is associated with distress or impairment in functioning and a response that is not typical or culturally expected.
What does a clinical psychologist do?
- Scientist-practitioner.
- Clinical description.
- Etiology –> cause of the problem.
- Treatment
- Prevention.
The biological tradition
Hippocrates ment that psych disorders should be treated as any other medical disease –> locus in the brain.
What model do clinical psychology use?
Behavioural, cognitive and social.
