Rape-Trauma Syndrome: Acute Phase
Occurs immediately after the assault and may last 2-3 weeks; characterized by disorganization of the person’s lifestyle, possible somatic sx; common reactions are shock, numbness, disbelief
Rape-Trauma Syndrome
A variant of of PTSD that occurs after an actual or attempted sexual assault; consists of acute phase and long-term reorganization process
Rape-Trauma Syndrome: Long-term Reorganization Phase
Occurs 2 or more weeks after the rape; consists of intrusive thoughts, increased activity, and increased emotional lability; fears and phobias may develop as a defensive reaction to the rape
Expressed Style of Coping
Behavioral responses to sexual assault (i.e. crying, withdrawing, smoking, abusing alcohol/drugs, talking about the event, agitation)
Controlled Style of Coping
Psychological and emotional trauma from sexual assault that may not be readily apparent (i.e. numbness)
