Sexual Abuse
Any form of sexual contact or exposure without consent, or in circumstances where the victim is incapable of giving consent
Physical Abuse
Infliction of physical pain or bodily harm
Emotional Abuse
Infliction of mental anguish
Neglect
Failure to provide for needs or protect form harm (i.e. physical, emotional, educational, medical)
Economic Abuse
Withholding of financial support or the illegal or improper exploitation of funds or other resources for one’s personal gain
Tension-Building Stage
Characterized by relatively minor incidents (i.e. pushing, shoving, verbal abuse)
Acute Battering Stage
Abuser releases built-up tension by brutal beatings
Honeymoon Stage
Characterized by kindness and loving behaviors
Primary Prevention
Measures taken to prevent the occurrence of abuse
Secondary Prevention
Early intervention in abusive situations to minimize their disabling or long-term effects
Tertiary Prevention
Healing and rehabilitative process by counseling individuals and family, providing support for groups of survivors, and assisting survivors achieve optimal level of safety, health, and well-being
