- Services: Multinational companies, airport
- e.g. Tokyo, shanghai

- Services: university, museums, cathedral-e.g. Birmingham, Hull, Manchester

- facilities provided for people e.g. shops,schools,hospitals, libraries etc… The number and range of services provided in a settlement increases with settlement size.
- Larger populations require more services
sphere of influence
- the area from which people travel to use the settlement
- e.g. newsagents would have small spheres of influence, secondary schools larger and then hospitals have very large spheres of influence
- larger the settlement is the greater its sphere of influence is likely to be
convenience goods
- something you can buy easily and for the same price all over the place
comparison goods
- products that you might shop around for before going ahead and buying something
