- make an area look better
- reduces urban sprawl
- making good use of waste ground
- it will bring a dead area back to life
disadvantages: -more homes in the town/city means traffic jams may get worse
greenfield sites
advantages:housing can be built quickly here
layout is not hampered by previous development

disadvantages:-new major roads will need to be built
- drive wildlife away
-less peace in the countryside
- spoil the appearance of an area
- less land for farming
- more shops and schools may also need to be built for the people who move there
- more countryside gets covered in concrete
- trees will have to be cut down
- more traffic on country roads
