Job design
the process by which managers specify and plan job tasks and work arrangements
Scientific Management
.Sought to improve work efficiency by creating small, repetitive tasks and training workers to do these tasks well

Importance of job design
how a job is defined has a major impact on job satisfaction, absenteeism, turnover rate, commitment to an organisation, and employee motivation
Core job characteristics

Job characteristics interact with individual skills needs and organisational context
MPS (motivating potential score)
Created when the core job characteristics are combined together.
Indicates the degree to which the job has the ability to motivate people.
MPS can be raised by enriching the core characteristics
Job redesign
Can be reached through:
Job rotation
Job enrichment
Job enlargement
Job rotation
Moving employees from job to job and different intervals.
Job design remains the same
Personnel who perform tasks are systematically changed
May be the only way to introduce variety into work
Job Enlargement
Assigning bigger tasks to employees to add more variety
Involves adding more tasks to employees without changing how much authority they have

Improves worker satisfaction and the quality of production but doesn’t appear to change the quantity produced
Job Enrichment
Giving employees more authority over how they perform their tasks.
“V-loading”
Improves satisfaction and performance
