Services in the schools Flashcards
What is intervention?
a strategy used to teach a new skill, to apply a skill in a new situation, or to make the skill easier to execute
What is accommodation?
intentions to help a student completely access a gen-ed curriculum
What is modification?
Changes the expectation of a student’s performance. This change is likely the drop in standards to evaluate their performance.
What is Tier 3 intervention?
the most intense form of academic support in RTI; it involves working 1:1 with students with severe academic and/or behavioral problems, such as students with IEPs
What is Tier 2 Intervention?
individualized support to students with significiant academic gaps and who do not respond to Tier 1 intervention strategies. Ex: tutoring, provide executive functioning support and structural support; working with ADHD students and APD students and with difficulty with literacy and language developmen)
What is Tier 1 intervention?
universal interventions that are implemented when there are signs of a student struggling; these intervention often occur in the classroom
Why do Common Core Standards exist?
disparate standards across the states; global competition rather than neighborhood, high school was not preparing many young people for college or careers.
Why are Common Core Standards Initiatives important?
Prepare students with knowledge and skills for college and career; ensure consistent expectations no matter the zip code; gave educators, parents, and students with clear, focused guideposts; offer economies of scale and sharing of best practices
What issue resulted from CCSI?
The standardization of standards was lost because the federal government gave each state the right to opt out or in and to choose which standards to adopt.
Who informs standards for CCSSI?
experience of teachers, content experts, states, and thinkers; feedback from the general public; advisory group members;
What is the biggest problem with CCSI?
Parents and educators are working with a system they are unfamiliar with
What are possible consultative strategies?
provide preferential seating, decrease distractions and rate of presentation, be redundant, contextualize language, decrease stress placed on students
What are possible collaborative strategies?
observe each other, align SLP goals with academic goals, divide work and let people who specialize in an area teach it, parallel teaching, create groups of students based on their skill level, provide primary and secondary levels of support.
What is a self-contained classroom?
a classroom where all students have been identified as SPLED
What is a 504 plan?
A plan from the Rehab act of 1973; bans agencies that receive federal funding from discriminating against people who are disabled. Can be used in place of an IEP for kids who don’t qualify for SPLED. SLPS must give similiar info for 504s as dictated by federal legislation for IEPs.
