Literacy as a school based SLP Flashcards
What are the list of literacy-based constructs?
syntactic awareness, morphological awareness, semantic awareness, orthographic awareness, phonological awareness
What is phonological awareness?
The ability to think about, ponder, and manipulate the sound structures of a given language
What is syntactic awareness?
A listener’s ability to arrange words into new meanings and larger concepts that they have never seen before. It’s a metaskill where someone can manipulate and judge word order within a context of a sentence based on grammatical rules
What is orthographic awareness?
The ability to turn what is spoken into writing given the spelling sequences that are allowed in a given language
What is morphological awareness?
Recognizing that words are made up of component morphemes which listeners can identify as families that share similar meanings
What are the stages of phonological awareness?
identify and be aware of phonemes –> identify letters –> encode and decode in print
Orthographic awareness includes
orthotactic rules (i.e., knowing what sounds cannot be used to begin a word such as tch), knowing that some sounds correspond to more than one letter such as long vowels; letters can be represented by phonemes; how letters can or cannot be combined
What purpose does semantic awareness have?
to develop a distinct understanding of how words are connected in order to develop a greater vocabulary, not just repeating new words learned
What are some ideas to address morphological awareness?
breaking words up into syllables and morphemes; identifying base words and affixes as well as combining them
What activity can be used to address syntactic awareness?
sentence scramble
What are some suggestions when using sentence scrambles?
use sentences from texts or read alouds; include words recently seen and new vocab words; start with a few words; scaffold by capitalizing the first word and putting a punctuation mark on another word
What is semantic awareness?
understanding that words have meanings
