Sepsis Flashcards
Terms
A life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to an infection injures its own host
Sepsis
It is characterised by a life-threatening organ dysfunction due to a dysregulated host response
Sepsis
A subset of sepsis where profound circulatory, cellular, and metabolic abnormalities substantially increase mortality
Septic shock
Bacteria in the blood
Bacteraemia
Pathophysiology of sepsis
immune system, inflammation, activation of coagulation
A protective response to eliminate the cause of injury and any necrotic tissue present as a result of injury
inflammation
3 stages of inflammation
vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, increased O2 demand
redness
rubor
swelling
tumor
heat
calor
pain
dolar
It causes and maintains vasodilation which helps to make capillaries to be more permeable
nitric oxide
responsible for the pain at the site of inflammation
bradykinin
they act directly to neutralise pathogens, mobilise WBC and amplify the immune response
complement proteins
helps clot formation by turning fibrinogen into fibrin
thrombin
