Terms
Significant reduced ability to understand new or complex information, to learn new skills, with a reduced ability to cope independently which started before adulthood
Learning disability
4 continuum of learning disability
Mild, moderate, severe and profound
Usually able to hold a conversation, and communicate most of their needs and wishes, although may need support to understand abstract or complex ideas
Mild learning disability
Likely to have some language skills that mean they can communicate about their day to day needs and wishes, although may need some support with caring for themselves.
Moderate learning disability
Often use basic words and gestures to communicate with their needs and need a high level of support with everyday activities.
Severe learning disability
Severe limited understanding and communication difficulties, includes multiple disabilities and impairments.
Profound learning disability
Different learning difficulties
dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, dyscalculia
A term used to describe changes in memory, concentration and the ability to think clearly and put thought into action.
Cognitive impairement
Causes of learning disability
genetics, pre-natal injections, brain injury, brain infections, unknown
This is the misattribution of physical health symptoms to part of an existing mental health diagnosis, rather than a genuine physical health problem requiring treatment
Diagnostic overshadowing
The symptoms of physical ill health are mistakenly attributed to either a mental health/behavioural problem or as being inherent in the person’s learning disabilities
Diagnostic overshadowing
It describes a complex picture of health and ill-health which obscures or colours our view of any clinical and prevents us from seeing what problems are presenting

Stopping the over medication of people with a learning disability or both
STAMP
Supporting treatment and appropriate medication in paediatrics
Prescribed for psychosis, depression, anxiety, sleep problems and epilepsy
