Congenital Heart Defects Flashcards
Terms
VSD
Ventricular septal defect
A birth defect of the heart in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the two lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart.
VSD
It changes the direction of blood flow in the heart and lungs where the hole lets O2 blood go back in the lungs instead of going out the body.
VSD
Treatments of VSD
open-heart surgery, transcatheter procedures
The preferred procedure for VSD where they use a patch or stitches to close the hole between the ventricles which requires heart-lung machine.
Open-heart surgery
A procedure that uses a catheter to access the heart via a major artery, which places an occluder to plug the hole.
Transcatheter procedure
A specialised device that are made of a mesh framework and covered in a synthetic material used for VSD
Occluder
A medication indicated for cardiac support in patients with acute heart failure, pulmonary HTN, or chronic heart failure
Milrinone
It is a medication often used during cardiac surgeries that requires cardiac support
Milrinone
A procedure in which a thin, flexible tube is guided through a blood vessel to the heart to diagnose or treat certain heart conditions
Cardiac catheterisation
It is an invasive diagnostic procedure that provides important information about the structure and function of the heart
Cardiac catheterisation
a type of portable ECG where i t records the electrical activity of the heart continuously over 24 hours or longer.
Holter monitoring
A compression of the heart that impairs ventricular filling and leads to a low cardiac output.
Cardiac tamponade
Medications that work by increasing vasodilation and decreasing workload of the hearts in patients with CHF.
ACE inhibitors
Medications that promotes the removal from the body of excess water, salts, poisons and accumulated metabolic products such as urea
Diuretics
