Sepsis Flashcards
5 components of the inflammatory process
Cell injury, Chemical mediators, vasodilation, vascular permeability, and immune system activation
Temp to fit SIRS criteria
> 38 or <36
Heart rate to fit SIRS criteria
> 90
What is the PaCO2 or RR to fit SIRS criteria?
<32mmHg or RR >20
What is the WBC count to classify as SIRS?
> 12 or <4
What are the early mediators for SIRS?
TNF and IL-1
Why does vasodilation occur in SIRS?
to help deliver oxygen, glucose, and increase transport of cells
3 causes of sepsis
bacteria, virus, fungi
How many SIRS criteria does a patient need to have to be considered septic?
2 or more
When are vasopressors given to treat septic shock?
If patient symptoms are unresolved by fluids and require vasopressors
Which lab is considered a measurement of perfusion in sepsis?
lactic acid
What is an important adverse side effect of antibiotics?
decrease in blood pressure, resulting in extreme hypotension
Why is vasopressin given for sepsis treatment?
ADH levels are depleted during sepsis
