Sensory Systems in Plants Flashcards
What is photomorphogenesis?
nondirectional, light-triggered development, may result in complex changes in form, included flowering
What is phototropisms?
directional growth responses to light
What is Pr?
aborbs red light (660 nm)
What is Pfr?
absorbs far-red light (730 nm)
What is seed germination?
inhibited by far-red light and stimulated by red light in many plants, only germinate when exposed to direct sunlight
What is shoot elongation?
etiolation caused by lack of red light
How do plants detect plant spacing?
measure samt of far-red light bounced back by neighboring plants
What’s a similarity and difference between chlorophyll and phytochrome?
similar: both pigments capable of absorbing light energy, difference: phytochrome mediate plants’ response to light by passing info > phytochrome transducers info, while chlorophyll transduces energy
What is ethylene?
product of plant metabolism and interacts with other plant hormones, auxin stimulates production in tissues around lateral bud and retards their growth, suppresses stems and root elongation, hastens ripening in fruit
