Angiosperms Flashcards
What are the 3 main characteristics of angiosperms?
plant with flowers, may produce fruits, ver abundant
What refinements do angiosperms in the vascular tissue?
have tracheids and vessels
What characteristics do flowers have for being the reproductive structure?
flower attracts pollinators, fertilization is less dependent on wind pollination
How do fruits help disperse seeds of angiosperms?
cling to animals, wing-like structures, edible
How are angiosperms important to the environment?
most diverse and geographically widespread phyla of plants, dominant vegetation in most terrestrial ecosystems, agriculture almost entirely based on angiosperms
What are the 4 whorls in a flower?
sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels
What is the calix?
consists of sepals, which protect the flower buds
What is the corolla?
consists of petals, which attract pollinators and flower buds
What is the androecium?
consists of stamens, anthers produce pollen (male gametophyte)
What is the gynoecium?
consist of one more carpels, which produce ovules where the female gametophyte develops
What does the carpel create?
megaspore mother cell (2n) and dividing into megaspores (n)
What do anthers create?
microspores mother cells (2n) and dividing into microspores and pollen (n)
What is the carpel?
modified leaf that encapsulates seeds, forms into a fruit, which is unique angiosperm feature
What are the 4 parts of a carpel?
ovule, ovary, style, and stigma
What is an example of a legume?
pea fruit
