Sensory Perception Flashcards
Just noticeable difference
Passing the threshold of discriminating 2 measurements (2.02 lbs vs 2lbs)
Weber’s Law
The ratio of just noticeable difference to standard measurement. Ratio is constant. (Lower weight has lower JND, Higher weight has higher JND)
Delta I/I=constant
Linear
Absolute threshold of sensation
Lowest level of stimulus that we can detect 50% of the time. Can be influenced by psychological state (if I expect a text I’ll be more likely to recognize my phone ring)
Subliminal messaging
Stimuli below our absolute threshold of sensation
Somatosensation types
Types: thermoception, mechanoception(pressure), nociception (pain), propioception (position).
Somatosensation intensity
If the sensations are very frequent it is more intense. If the signal is more sparse (slow firing) then it’s less intense
Somatosensation timing
Non adapting: action potentials don’t change
Slow adapting:APs gradually change
Fast adapting: APs change quickly
Vestibular system
Ear system that detects balance, dizziness
Signal detection theory
Decision making with uncertainty. Is the signal there, and can you recognize it
Bottom up processing
Begins with stimulus. Stimulus influences our perception. No preconceived ideas.
DATA DRIVEN
Top down processing
Using background knowledge to influence what is being perceived.
Using what’s in our head to determine what we’re perceiving
Gestalt Principle
Similarity: grouping similar objects
Pragranz: reality is reduced to simplest form– Olympic Rings are 5 rings, not a lot of complex shapes
Proximity: objects close to each other are grouped
Continuity:lines are seen along the smoothest path
Closure: mind fills in gaps to form recognized images
