Sensory Nervous System Flashcards
Neuronal Cells
transmit electrical ad chemical signals,, 3 body parts of soma, dendrites, axon- electrically excitable, sensory, motor, interneurons
Non-neuronal (glia) cell
provide support, protection, nourishment, many different kind -do not generate AP -communicate with each other
Single Sensory Receptors
detect specific types of stimulus, single celled
-photoreceptors, mechanoreceptors, thermoreceptors
Complex Receptors
multiple cell types, multiple components of sensory cells, accessory structures and supporting cells
-taste buds, inner ears -allows multiple types of sensory info to be integrated and specialized
6 categories of sensory receptors
Mechano-respond to mechanical deformation (stretch)
Thermo-respond to cold and heat
Nocio- respond to pain (tissue damage)
Electromagnetic- respond to electrical magnetic fields, infrared and ultraviolet light
Photo- respond to visible light
Chemo- respond to various chemicals
Receptor potential:
produced from stimuli after ion movement across membrane: alters rate at which AP is generated in axon hillock
Mechanoreceptors
stretch receptors: common in invertebrates and vertebrates -detect relative position of body structure
-mechanically gated Na+ channels
Hair cells
receptor cell with stereocilia to detect fluid currents
Phototransduction
rods and cones
Chemoreceptors
taste, salt and sour simple
Thermoreceptors
temperature infrared, pit organs and crotalid snakes
Electroreceptors
electric field, electric fish
