Sensory-Motor Flashcards
1
Q
What is sensory processing
A
The method and manner of sensation detection and transmission through the CNS
2
Q
What is registration
A
Detection of sensory information
3
Q
Explain Dunn’s model of sensory processing
A
- basic pattern of sensory responsiveness and behavior
- may vary between sensory systems
- high threshold + passive = registration
- high threshold + active = seeking
- low threshold + passive = sensitivity
- low threshold + active = avoiding
4
Q
characteristics of someone with low registration
A
- self-absorbed
- uninterested
- dull affect
- apathetic
- responds slowly
- lives in own world
5
Q
characteristics of someone with sensation seeking
A
- active
- continuously engaging
- fidgety
- poor regards to safety
- constantly moving
- constantly touching
- impulsive
- ‘engine runs too fast’
- explosive emotions
6
Q
characteristics of someone with sensory sensitivity
A
- active
- continuously distracted
- excitable/ anxious
- constantly moving
- emotionally labile
- impulsive
7
Q
characteristics of someone with sensory avoidance
A
- avoidance behaviour
- withdrawn
- overly tires
- resistant to change
- reliant on rigid rituals
- emotionally labile
- lives in own world
8
Q
methods of assessment that can be used
A
- interviews and questionnaires
- informal and formal clinical observations
- standardized testing
9
Q
when using questionnnaires
A
- registration and modulation ( with components of discrimination)
- sensory profile 2 (Dunn)
+ infant and toddler ( 0-3 y)
+ caregiver questionnaire ( 3-10 y)
+ self-questionnaire ( adolescent - adult)
+ school companion (3-11 y) - sensory processing measure
+ home form
+ main classroom form
10
Q
assessment through observation
A
sensory regulation and modulation are best observed through their effects on:
- activity level/ behaviour
- Affect/ emotion and motivation
- arousal
- attention
- sensory discrimination is best observed through: - perceptual sills
- postural-ocular control
- praxis
- adaptation and organization of actions
11
Q
observation of sensory under-responsivity
A
- high neurological threshold
- behaviour in accordance with threshold
- touch:
1. does not notice when touched
2. does not respond to pain
3. does not notice dirt/wet
4. does not notice something too hot or cold
5. does not notice drooling or food on face - auditory:
1. does not respond when name is called
2. does not respond to verbal directions given only once
3. does not respond to unexpected loud sounds
4. tends to be quiet, passive, or withdraw in social situations - visual
1. does not notice activity in busy environment
2. does not notice the visual reminders in the classroom or on the blackboard
3. misses the visual cues in the environment - proprioception
1. performs movement in a slow and plodding fashion
2. may have a weak grasp - vestibular
1. gives little attention or like or dislike of movement - smell
1. does not notice strong or noxious odors - taste
1. does not seek food when hungry
2. able to tolerate extremely spicy foods - more than cultural norm
12
Q
observations of sensory seeking behaviours
A
- high neurological threshold
- behaviour to counteract threshold
- touch
1. touches people to the point of irritating them
2. overly affectionate
3. engages in pinching, biting, and scratching
4. seeks touching, feeling, or vibrating objects - auditory
1. speaks in a loud voice
2. makes noises for the sake of making noise
3. likes loud volume on the tv or radio
4. difficulty taking turns when talking - visual
1. excessive preference for fast changing images on the tv
2. excessive watching of flickering or blinking lights
3. watches spinning objects - proprioceptive
1. always bumping, crashing, or falling on purpose
2. falls out of chair
3. fidgets, wiggling, and restless throughout the day - vestibular
1. engages in excessive amounts of movement
2. tends to be a daredevil
3. spinning throughout the day - smell
1. eats only foods with strong flavours
2. smells people and objects
3. smells toys - taste
1. licking, sucking and chewing non food items
2. always putting things in mouth
3. prefers crunchy, chewy foods
