Cataracts
Painful, gradual blurring and loss of vision, Treatment includes surgical removal of lens.
Color Blindness
Genetics disorder cones are affected. Use the Ishihara test where color plates are used to test for color blindness.
Conjunctivitis
Pink eye, rendess, pain, swelling and discharge, Treatment includes antibiotic eye drops
Detached Retina
Retina pulls away from the layer of blood vessels that provides it with oxygen and nutrients. Symptoms: Warning signs of retinal detachment may include sudden appearance of floaters and flashes and reduced vision.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Caused by damage of blood vessels of retina. Symptoms include floaters, blurred vision, impaired color vision, dark or empty areas in vision and vision loss.
Glaucoma
Overproduction of aqueous humor, lack of drainage, or aging. Symptoms develop gradually, mild aching, loss of peripheral vision, halos around light.
Macular Degeneration
Incurable eye disease, partial loss of vision, abnormality where straight lines appear wavy, blurred vision, loss of central vision. Treatments range from medications, injections into the eye and laser surgery.
Myopia
Nearsighted. Eyeball too long, concave lenses
Hyperopia
Farsighted, Eyeball too short, Convex lenses
Presbyopia
Old Sightedness, Lens loses elasticity, Bifocals
Astigmatism
Irregular curvature of cornea or lens, Corrective lenses.
External Otitis
Acute infection of the ear canals skin caused by bacteria
Otitis media
Middle ear infection. Frequent complication of common cold in children
Myringotomy
Procedure performed for chronic ear infections
Otosclerosis
Stapes become hardened and immovable causing deafness in young adults. Tx: Stapedectomy
Meniere’s disease
condition affecting semicircular canals causing vertigo
Tinnitus
Sensation of hearing ringing, buzzing etc. Common causes are age related , exposure to loud noises, impacted cerumen, otosclerosis.
Presbycusis
Deafness due to aging
Conductive hearing loss
Sounds to the inner ear are blocked by ear wax, fluid or abnormal bone growth in middle ear.
Sensorineural hearing loss
Damage to inner ear or auditory nerve causing partial or complete deafness
Deviated Nasal Septum
cartilage of septum has a bend. Sx. Blockage of airflow in one nostril, etc.
Nasal polyps
Growths in nasal cavity associate with rhinitis
Rhinitis
inflammation of the lining of the nose causing nasal congestion, drainage, sneezing or itching
Glossitis
inflammation of the tongue
