Appendicitis
Inflammation of the appendix (Pain in RLQ, Treated by appendectomy)
Cholecystitis
Inflammation of the gallbladder. Symptoms occur after eating fatty foods (Treatments shock waves to shatter gallstones, cholecystectomy)
Cholelithiasis
Cholecystitis with gallstones
Diverticulitis
Inflammation of the diverticula (Symptoms abdominal pain, swelling, fever, irregular bowel movements. Treatments include antibiotics possibly surgery)
Cirrhosis
Chronic destruction of liver cells. Symptoms liver enlargement and large belly ascites
Gastroenteritis
Inflammation of the stomach and small intestines. (Cause: Food poisoning or infection. Can be prevented by good handwashing)
Gastritis
Is inflammation of only the stomach
Hepatitis
Viral inflammation of the liver. Types: A, B, C.
Hepatitis A
transmitted through food or water contaminated with feces of an infected person
Hepatitis B
Transmitted by body fluids. More serious than A. Vaccine recommended for all health care workers
Hepatitis C
Transmitted by body fluids by sharing contaminated needles. No vaccine
Ulcer
Open sore in the lining of the digestive tract
Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease
Severe inflammation of the colon with ulcers and abscesses.
Gingivitis
Inflammation of the gums. (Symptoms bleeding gums)
GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)
Erosion of the esophageal lining by acid reflux, often due to a weakened lower esophageal sphincter
Anorexia
Eating disorder where person has a psychological poor self image and does not eat enough food.
Bulimia
A psychological eating disorder that causes a person to “Binge” eat. The binge eat and then fast or induce vomiting or take laxatives to get rid of what they just ate.
Obesity
Causes by overeating and not exercising. High BMI
Cleft Palate
Birth defect, occurs when the hard and soft palate of the roof of the mouth does not fully develop. (Corrected with surgery)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Affects mostly women, diarrhea,, constipation and abdominal cramps.
Caries (Dental Cavities)
Having bad teeth and gums. This can cause pain and gum digestive problems from not being able to eat.
Constipation
too much water being absorbed back into the body
Diarrhea
not enough water is absorbed back into the body in the large intestine
Jaundice
Liver disease, symptoms: yellow tint int he skin or eyes by excess bilirubin. Treated by increased fluid intake and fiber to help the liver.
