Tetany
Causes muscle spasms from damaged parathyroid glands which result in low blood calcium
Acromegaly
too much GH in adulthood, overdevelopment of bones in the face, hands, feet.
Giantism
Excessive growth of long bones, extreme tallness, decreased sexual development and at time delayed mental development.
Dwarfism
Caused by not having enough growth hormone
Goiter
enlargement of thyroid gland
Hyperthyroidism
overactive thyroid gland, nervousness, treatment is radiation to destroy part of thyroid or thyroidectomy
Hypothyroidism
underactive thyroid gland, feeling cold, constipation, thinning hair dry skin, brittle hair, Treatment is thyroid hormone replacement, table salt may help
Grave’s Disease
Severe form of hyperthyroidism, Strained and tense facial expression, exophthalmia ( protruding eyeballs) Treatment is removal or destruction of thyroid followed by daily thyroid hormone.
Addison’s Disease
adrenal glands produce too little cortisol. Skin has a tan appearance
Cushing’s Syndrome
Excess cortisol, abdominal obesity, easy bruising, moon face
Diabetes (Type 1)
early in life, more severe, requires insulin
Diabetes (Type 2)
older in life controlled by diet and frequently occurs in obese adults.
