Sensation & Perception Flashcards
transduction; conversion of physical, electromagnetic, auditory, & other info from internal or external environment to electrical signals in nervous system
Sensation
processing of info to make sense of its significance
Perception
neurons that respond to stimuli and trigger electrical signals
Sensory Receptors
minimum amt of stimulus that renders a difference in perception
threshold
minimum of stimulus energy that is needed to activate a sensory system
absolute threshold
minimum difference in magnitude btw 2 stimuli before one can perceive this difference
difference threshold or just noticeable difference
focuses on the changes in our perception of the same stimuli depending on both internal and external context
Signal Detection Theory
tendency of subjects to systematically respond to a stimulus in a particular way due to nonsensory factors
Response Bias
used for color vision and to sense fine details
cones
functional and only allow sensation of light and dark, contain single pigment called rhodopsin
rods
ability to simultaneously analyze & combine info regarding color, shape, and motion
Parallel Processing
memories and expectations that allow the brain to recognize the whole object & then recognize the componente
Top- down processing
elements close to one another tend to be perceived as a unit
proximity
objects that are similar tend to be grouped together
similarity
elements that appear to follow in the same pathway tend to be grouped together
