Sensation and Perception Terms Flashcards
Signal Detection theory
detection depends on experience, expectations, alertness, etc.
(more likely to notice a door slam outside when waiting for the pizza guy)
sensory adaptation
diminished sensitivity as a result of constant stimulation
(can you feel your underwear?)
sensory habituation
diminished sensitivity due to regular exposure
perceptual set
tendency to see something as part of a group
-speeds up signal processing
inattentional blindness
failure to notice something added because your so focused on another task
change blindness
failure to notice a change in the scene
cornea
protects the eye
pupil/iris
controls light entering the eye
lens
focuses light on retina
retina
contains rods and cones
fovea
area of best vision (cones here)
rods
black and white, dim light
cones
color, bright light (red, green, blue)
bipolar cells
connect rods and cones and ganglion cells
ganglion
create optic nerve
blind spot
occurs where the optic nerve leaves the eye
feature detectors
specialized cells that see shapes, lines, etc. located in occipital lobe
constancies
recognize that objects do not physically change despite changes in sensory imput (size, shape, brightness)
visual capture
visual system overwhelm all others
-nauseous in IMAX theater co
phi phenomenon
adjacent light blink on/off succession
-looks like movement (traffic signs with arrows)
stroboscopic movement
motion produces by a rapid succession of slightly varying images (animations)
monocular cues
how we form a 3D image from a 2D image
binocular cues
how both eyes make up a 3D image
place theory
location where hair cells bend determines sound (high pitches)
frequency theory
rate at whoch action potentials are sent determines sound (low pitches)
muller-lyer illusion
doesnt work on cultures without exposure to modern architecture
-has to do with person placing a mid-point on 3 different arrows
ponzo illusion
happens due to linear perspective
-vanishing point
McGurk Effect
see mouth saying ba or fa overides what you actually hear, va
-interactions between hearing and visual perception
vestibular
sense of balance (semicircular canals in ear)
kinesthetic
sense of body positon
gestalt psychology
whole is greater than the sum of its parts
