Personality Disorders
cause serious problems, distress and impairment of functioning in personal, social, and/or occupational situations

individual quality or trait that makes one person different from another
Paranoid personality disorder
Pervasive distrust and suspiciousness of others
Paranoid personality trait –
person tends to be distrustful or suspicious in certain situations
Paranoid personality disorder
S: Spouse fidelity suspected
U: Unforgiving (bears grudges)
S: Suspicious of others
P: Perceives attacks (and reacts quickly)
E: “Enemy or friend” (suspects associates, friends)
C: Confiding in others feared
T: Threats perceived in benign events
Schizoid personality disorder
Pattern of detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of expressions of emotions
Schizoid personality trait –
likes being alone, but has friends and engages in activities
SCHIZOTYPAL PERSONALITY DISORDER
Demonstrates many symptoms related to those of schizophrenia but of less severe nature
Schizotypal personality trait
appears and acts a little eccentric but otherwise “normal”
Antisocial personality disorder
Disregard for and violation of rights of others
Antisocial personality trait
“bully-like” behavior but doesn’t disregard law or physically violate others
BIOLOGICAL CAUSES OF APD
Antisocial Personality Disorder can be caused by brain abnormalities
THE AMYGDALA
The amygdala helps us learn from the negative consequences of our actions.
It is also involved in processing facial expressions
Borderline personality disorder
Demonstrates unpredictability of self-image in relationships and emotions
Borderline personality trait
– low self-esteem
HISTRIONIC PERSONALITY DISORDER
Excessive emotions and attention seeking
Histrionic personality trait –
tendency towards dramatic, exaggerated behavior
NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY DISORDER
Attitude that the world exists to meet his/her needs
Narcissistic personality trait
- vain
AVOIDANT PERSONALITY DISORDER
Demonstrates pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, and hypersensitivity to negative situations
Avoidant personality trait
somewhat shy
DEPENDENT PERSONALITY DISORDER
Excessive need to be taken care of that leads to submissive and clinging behavior and fears of separation
Dependent personality trait
likes to be with friend
OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE PERSONALITY DISORDER*
Preoccupation with orderliness and perfectionism

TREATMENT
Treatment for most personality disorders is with a combination of psychotherapy and medications.
