What is an interview?
A directed conversation with intent for the interviewer to gain information from a client
What is a clinical interview?
A primary assessment completed between a psychologist and a client
What is a questionnaire?
A set of questions or prompts to gain information from a participant about a certain criteria
What is a structured interview?
Where an interviewer asks a set of prepared closed or open ended questions exactly as worded
What is an unstructured interview?
Where an interviewer doesn’t use any prepared questions and lets the interview flow as a natural conversation
What are open questions?
Questions that do not have fixed responses, so allows for depth and detail within answers
What are closed questions?
Questions that limit the participant to a pre-determined set of responses (e.g yes or no)
What is interviewer bias?
Where the expectations of an interviewer interferes with the judgement of the interviewee
What is a ranked scale?
A scale that asks participants to order items based on a specific criteria
What is a rating scale?
A scale that asks participants to rate on a number scale based on a specific criteria
What is social desirability?
The tendency for people to present themselves in a generally favourable fashion
What are the strengths of using interviews?
- Open questions lead to detailed information
- Closed questions allow for comparisons to be drawn
- Structured interviews reduce interviewer bias
- Good at building rapport
What are the limitations of interviews?
- Open questions can be prone to researcher bias
- Closed questions lead to limited understanding
- Unstructured interviews carry low ecological validity
- May suffer from social desirability
What are the strengths of questionnaires?
- Open ended questions provide rich and detailed data
- Closed questions are less subject to bias
- Used to question large samples of people quickly
- Reduces investigator effects
- No previous training required
What are the weaknesses of using questionnaires?
- Open ended questions may be prone to investigator bias
- Closed questions reduce ecological validity
- Social desirability effects
- Only those who can read or write can take part
