Reliability and Validity Flashcards
What is reliability?
Another word for this is consistency
It usually means that a test or research study can be depended upon to produce the same, or similar, results every time it is carried out
What is validity?
Another word for validity is relevance or appropriateness
The extent to which a study measures what it intends to measure
What is internal validity?
The extent to which the outcome of a study is the result of the variables that are manipulated in the study (all confounding variables must be controlled)
What is concurrent validity?
The extent to which a psychological measure relates to an existing similar measure
What is face validity?
The extent to which a study at face value is measuring what it claims to
What is construct validity?
The degree to which a test or measurement accurately assesses the underlying theoretical concept
What is predictive validity?
Evaluates the capability of a measurement or assessment to predict future results
What is external validity?
The extent to which the findings from a single study are relevant to other populations, contexts, or times
What is ecological validity?
The extent to which the research effect is likely to be demonstrated in other settings
What is temporal validity?
The extent to which a study can generalise findings beyond the particular historical context of the study
What is population validity?
The extent to which you can generalise findings from your sample to a larger group of people
Name two ways of testing reliability.
Test re test
Inter observer
What is test re test reliability?
The consistency of measures when the same test is administered to the same person twice
What is inter-observer reliability?
The extent to which there is agreement between two or more observers involved in observations of a behaviour
