Self report Flashcards
What are the two self-report techniques?
Questionnaires and interviews
Define a questionnaire.
A pre-set list of questions to which a participant responds.
What is an open question?
A question where the respondents are free to answer in any way they wish.
What is a closed question?
A fixed amount of responses that the respondents have to choose from.
What is a Likert scale?
Respondents indicate the extent to which they agree/disagree with a statement given. Usually range from strongly agree through neutral to strongly disagree.
What are rating scales?
A means of assessing attitudes or experiences by asking the respondent to rate it on a scale.
What is a fixed choice option?
A question with a pre-determined number of answers.
What are the things that make a good question? (4)
Clarity
Avoid overused jargon
Avoid emotive or leading questions
Avoid double negative or double barreled questions
What are the strengths of questionnaires? (4)
Cost effective
Relatively effortless
Can be distributed quickly
Data produced is straightforward to analyse
What are the limitations of questionnaires?
Social desirability bias (Participants put themselves in a good light)
Response bias (Participants only respond in one way)
State the three types of interviews.
Structured, Semi-structured, Unstructured
What is a structured interview?
A pre-determined list of questions in a set order.
What is a semi-structured interview?
A list of questions that has been worked out in advance but interviewers are also free to ask follow-up questions.
What is an unstructured interview?
More conversational with no fixed questions but a general sense of the topic. The interviewee is encouraged to expand on their answers.
