Ethical considerations Flashcards
Define ethics
Considerations we need to take into account when conducting research
Cost - benefit analysis
Do the benefits outweigh the costs
Define informed consent
Telling participants all the information. Can give participants a consent letter
Define assent
Asking a child if they want to take part in a study
Define consent
Participants know they are taking part in a study but not the full details
Define Presumptive consent
Asking a similar group of people if the study is acceptable not the actual participants. If they agree we can presume our group of participants will also agree
Define Prior general consent
Participants give permission to take part in a number of different studies - including one that will involve deception
Define Retrospective consent
After the study - participants are asked for informed consent in the debrief. They may not be aware a study took place or may have been deceived
What is the data protection act in terms of confidentiality
Our right to have our personal information protected
How can researchers maintain anonymity?
By using numbers or initials for participants
What is in a debrief
- right to withdraw
- what the data is used for
- Main aims of the study
- Info about other experimental conditions
- Assurance that behaviour is normal
- Offer counselling
What is the right to withdraw?
The right to remove oneself from the study. Participants must be told in the brief and reminded in the debrief that they have this right.
What is protection from harm?
Participants should not be placed at any more risk than they would in everyday circumstances. Participants must be protected from both physical harm and psychological harm
