self efficacy + sports confidence Flashcards
What is self efficacy
The self-confidence we have in specific situations.
What is sports confidence
The belief of certainty that individuals possess about their ability to succeed in sport.
What is Self-esteem
The feeling of self-worth that determines how valuable / competent we feel.
What does high confidence do to performance
Better performance
What does low sports confidence do to participation
Reduced participation in sport
What does high confidence do to self esteem
High self esteem
What factors affect self esteem
Relationships with coach,parents,teammates
What does high self esteem cause
- Reduced anxiety
- More optimistic view on life
- fewer personal problems
- better body image
What does low self esteem cause
- Depressed
- eating disorder
- engaging in risky behaviours
What is Vealey’s model
Investigates the relationship between competitiveness and self confidence in sport
What is the key finding of vealey’s model
The more confident a person has in general(trait) and in that specific situation(state), the more successful you will be
What is the objective sports situation
The nature of the task that is to be performed
-What you are currently doing
-e.g. passing in football
What is trait sports confidence
An individual’s innate, natural belief in their general sporting ability
-Fixed/stable
What is competitive orientation
How prepared an individual is to compete and the types of goals they have set
What is the state sports confidence
-Unstable and unchangeable belief in their ability to be successful at a particular time
What is performance of sport
-If SC state is high then their performance will be confident
-If SC state is low then their behaviour will not be confident
What is the subjective perceptions of outcome
The extent to which a performer believes that their performance was successful
What happens if the subjective perception of outcome is positive
It will increase trait sports confidence
What happens if the subjective perception of outcome is negative
It will decrease trait sports confidence
What is bandura’s theory of self efficacy
-Self confidence can be specific to a particular situation
-Self-efficacy can vary from situation to situation and can affect performance
E.g. of banduras theory
If someone expects to be confident in a specific situation, they are more likely to choose that activity
What are the 4 types of information our expectations of self-efficacy depend upon
- Performance accomplishments (e.g. past experiences)
- Vicarious experiences(e.g.modelling by others)
- Social persuasion(e.g. coaching feedback)
- Physiological and emotional states
Raising self-efficacy
- Ensure success to start with(e.g. high jump and start with bar low)
- Demonstrate using someone with the same ability level
- Verbal encouragement
- Explain that is natural to be worried, which prepares the body
Bandura suggested people with high self efficacy
- Seek challenges - approach behaviour
- Attribute success to internal factors such as ability and effort.
- The above would elevate confidence and increase expectation of success in next challenge.
Bandura suggested people with low self efficacy
- Adopt avoidance behaviour
- Give up easily and become anxious when task is difficult
- They attribute failure to internal factors
- The above would decrease confidence and reduce expectation of success in next challenge and introduce learned helplessness.
