multi store memory model Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 stages of the multi store memory model
A
-Short term sensory store
-Short term memory
-Long term memory
2
Q
What does the multi store memory model look like
A
3
Q
What happens during the short term sensory store
A
- Info enters the brain from the environment
- Duration:Info stored for 0.15-1 second before it is filtered
- Capacity-Limitless
- Selective attention(Filter system)-Relevant info sent to short term memory and irrelevant info is forgotten
4
Q
What happens during short term memory
A
- Where the info is used to decide what needs to be done
- Capacity-Only limited amounts of info can be stored(7+/- 2)
- Duration-For approx 30 seconds
- Chunking-Different pieces of info can be grouped together and remembered as one piece
- If it is important enough and is rehearsed it will pass to the long term memory
5
Q
What happens during the long term memory
A
- Limitless capacity to store encoded info
- Motor programmes are stored here because they have been rehearsed many times
- Continued rehearsal can lead to responses becoming automatic
6
Q
What is encoding
A
The conversion of information into codes(visual, auditory and semantic)
7
Q
What is storage
A
The retention of information over a period of time
8
Q
What is retrieval
A
Recovering stored information from our memory
9
Q
How can memory be improved
A
- Rehearsal
- Meaningfulness
- Association
- Avoiding overload
- Organise information
- Mental imagery
10
Q
Advantages
A
- Distinguishes between STM and LTM
- Simple
11
Q
Disadvantages
A
Over simplified
