cognitive theory of learning Flashcards
What is the cognitive theory of learning
Suggests that an individual learns by thinking about and understanding what is required to solve a problem rather than developing a series of responses to various stimuli. The problem is solved as a whole using previous knowledge and experience
What are the 6 factors the cognitive theory of learning includes
- Problem solving/insight learning
- Thinking and understanding
- Gestaltists
- Whole learning
- Previous experiences
- Intervening variables
What is insight learning
a form of problem solving in which the person develops a sudden understanding of a problem’s solution
What is thinking and understanding
Think and understand what to do during the skill
What is gestaltists
Learning the skill as a whole
What is whole learning
learning of a whole motor task is more effective and motivating than learning only a part of the movement
What are previous experiences
Have you been in the stimuli before
What are intervening variables
Variables that need to be taken into consideration when performing a skill
E.g. height of bunker,wind etc
Advantages of cognitive theory of learning
- Performer can become more self dependent and self correct during a game
- They can adapt better to different situations
- They could make quick progress as they develop kinesthesis
Disadvantages of cognitive theory of learning
- using whole practice is difficult if the skill is dangerous or performer is a learner
- They might not have any past experiences to draw on
