Self-Concept
A mental representation or overall sense of “you”
What Aspects make up the Self-Schema
Complex, fluid, shaped by relationships and goals
Introspection
Thinking about our own thoughts. Our attitudes are often inconsistent with our actual behaviours
Affective Forecasting
Predictions of how future events will affect our emotional states
Social Identity Theory
the development of our identity is connected to particular social groups. We view ourselves in relation to traits we share with certain groups that are different from other groups
What determines when and why some aspects of the self are more salient than others?
- Social Context
- How important the particular personal trait is to the self
- Others’ linguistic references to ourselves
What do we tend to do to avoid rejection?
Change aspects of ourselves or rebel against those rejecting us by making that feature even more self-defining
Autobiographical Memory
memory system consisting of episodes recollected from an individual’s life, based on a combination of episodic (personal experiences and specific objects, people and events experienced at particular time and place) and semantic (general knowledge and facts about the world) memory
Self-Control
Refraining from actions we might enjoy more- - but performing actions we prefer not to if they help us move toward our goals
Ego Depletion
Diminished capacity to exert subsequent self-control after preciously doing so
Intrinsic Motivation
taking a certain action for the sake of enjoyment, leads us to be more fully engaged and greater curiosity and pleasure
Extrinsic Motivation
taking a certain action in response to external pressure or obligation
Self-Esteem
Your evaluation of your own self-worth
Attribution
Deciding who or what is responsible for a particular outcome
Self-Serving Attribution
Internal Attributions for positive outcomes, External Attributions for negative outcomes
