Selective Breeding And Genetic Engineering Flashcards
1
Q
Process of selective breeding
A
- From existing stock select the ones with the best characteristics
- Breed them together
- Select the best offspring and breed them together
- Repeat for several generations
2
Q
Usefulness of selective breeding
A
- Increasing productivity of cows
- Increase number of offspring
- Increase crop yield
3
Q
Fish farming in cages
A
- To stop them using as much energy swimming around
- protects them from infraspecific predation
- Controlled diet
- They are more prone to disease
4
Q
Fish farming in tanks
A
- Water can be monitored to check temperature, pH and oxygen levels
- Control their diet
- Water can be removed and filter which can avoid pollution
5
Q
Process of genetic engineering
A
- DNA you want to insert is cut out with a restriction enzyme and the vector DNA is cut open with the same enzyme
- Vector DNA and DNA are mixed together with ligase enzyme
- The ligases join two pieces of DNA together to produce recombinant DNA
- Recombinant DNA is inserted into other cells
- These cells can now use the gene inserted to make the protein you want
6
Q
Process of micropropogation
A
- Explants are taken from the tips of stems and side roots
- Explants are sterilised to kill any microorganisms
- Explants are placed in a Petri dish that contains a nutrient medium
- Cells in the explants grow and divide into a small plant
- The small plants are taken out of the soil and put into greenhouses
7
Q
Process of cloning animals
A
- Nucleus of sheep egg cell is removed creating an enucleated cell
- A diploid nucleus was inserted in its place
- The cell was stimulated by an electronic shock and starts dividing by mitosis
- The dividing cell is implanted into the uterus of another sheep until it was ready to be born
