Cycles Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the carbon cycle
A
- Green plants use CO2 to make carbs, fats and proteins
- Eating passes carbon compounds from plants to animals
- Respiration cause CO2 back into the air
- Useful products (fossil fuels) are burned and releases CO2 back into the air
2
Q
Two examples of nitrogen fixation
A
- Lighting: amount of energy is enough to make nitrogen react with oxygen to form nitrates
- Nitrogen-fixing bacteria: atmospheric N2 to nitrogen compounds
3
Q
Four types of bacteria in nitrogen cycle and their uses
A
- Decomposers: breaks down proteins and urea and turns it into ammonia
- Nitrifying bacteria: ammonia to nitrates
- Nitrogen fixing bacteria: atmospheric N2 to nitrogen compounds
- Denitrifying bacteria: nitrates to N2 gas
4
Q
Describe the water cycle
A
- Water from sea evaporates into water vapour
- Water vapour is carried upwards, cools and condenses to form clouds
- Water falls from clouds as precipitation and is returned to land/sea
