Deforestation Flashcards
1
Q
Leaching
A
When trees are removed nutrients get leached away but don’t get replaced leaving infertile soil
2
Q
Disturbing the water cycle
A
- Trees stop rainwater going into the river too quickly. When cut down it can lead to flooding
- Transpiration releases some rainwater into the atmosphere making local climate drier
3
Q
Disturbing balance of CO2 and O2
A
Forests take up CO2 by photosynthesis, store it in wood and slowly releases as it decomposes. When cut down/burnt CO2 is released and contributes to global warming
4
Q
Soil erosion
A
Tree roots hold the soil together and when they are removed the soil is eroded leaving infertile ground
