Plants Flashcards
Phototropism
Positive
• grows towards the light for photosynthesis (shoots)
Negative:
• grows away from light to get deeper in the soil (roots)
Geotropism
Positive:
• grows in direction of gravity for anchorage, maximum water and minerals (roots)
Negative:
• grows away from gravity to get maximum light (shoots)
Hydrotropism
Positive:
• grows towards water for maximum photosynthesis (roots)
Shoots don’t respond to water
Plant growth is controlled by
Auxins
Word and chemical equation for photosynthesis
Word:
Carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
Chemical:
6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Limiting factor of photosynthesis
- Light intensity
- Carbon dioxide concentration
- Temperature
Five uses of glucose
- Respiration
- Stored as starch
- Stored as lipid
- Nitrates added to make protein
- Cell wall
Nitrates
Make protein
Magnesium
Make chlorophyll
Phosphates
Makes DNA, ATP and cell membranes
Xylem
Carries water and minerals up the plant
Phloem
Carries sucrose and amino acids up and down the plant
Define transpiration
The evaporation of water from the leaves via the stomata measured using a potometer
Factors that affect the rate of transpiration
- Air movement
- Humidity
- Temperature
- Pressure
- Light intensity
- Water availability
