Selection
-the process of deciding which applicant for a job a business should accept
What is a cv
- document that an applicant designs providing
- personal details
- education history
- previous employment history
- sustainability and reason for applying for the job
- name of references
What are the advantages of a cv
- people who have their cv ready with apply without delay
- formats for cv are looser and more informal allowing them to inject some of their own personality
What are the disadvantages of cvs
- lot of candidates may have help making their cv meaning they might not be as good as their document suggests
- people might just be sending lots off meaning they wont be personalised to the business so they can waste time
- they are difficult to compare as some peoples may be 1 page whereas others may be pages
Application form compared to cv
- job applications are normally personal to the business , cvs are more generic
- they tailor to the exact needs of the business in an applicant form
Advantages of application form.
- allows you to get the answers to the questions you want
- they will get less random applicants and instead applicants that are more serious and passionate about that job
Disadvantages of application forms
- fewer applicants due to the time it takes
- they might not have the time to fill the application forms meaning they may miss out on really good candidates
Physchometric tests
- They assess capabilities (intelligence)
- aptitude (skills)
- personality
Other tests include
- scenario test
- written test
Advantages of tests
- Ascertain/establishes what people will do in real situation
- ascertain if a candidates personality fits with the organisation
- responses less likely to be impacted by nerves
Limited usefulness of tests
-candidate may give the answers that they think the interviewer is looking for not what they would really do
Interviews
- can establish if their personality fits with the business
- non verbal aspects can be considered
- can see how candidates cope under pressure
- chance for candidates to ask questions
- see if candidate matches up with cv
Limitation of the usefulness of interviews
- an unstructured 30 minute interview does no predict long term performance
- extroverts do better in interviews than introverts
- we are more likely to base it off the interview than good references meaning could pick wrong person
Span of control
-the number of employees a manager is responsible for , the number of subordinates that report to one person
Productivity
-the output er person in a particular period of time
Appraisal
-a review of an employee performance with goals to improve on and how to achieve them
Organisation by system
-with each individual function operates as its own smaller business with their own sales, HR and marketing

- A letter of application, also known as a cover letter, it is a document sent with a cv or application form to provide additional information
