-A strong desire to act in a particular way and to achieve a certain result.( the will to work)
Morale
Refers to spirit. If morale in an individual group or team is high than there exists a spirit of confidence, purpose etc
Benefits of a motivated workforce
- Increased productivity
- Lower absenteeism
- Reduced lateness
- Reduced employee turnover
- Easier to recruit staff
- Less wastage
- lower training costs
- Commitment(work extra)
- Business reputation
- Change easier to implement (less resistance)

Non monetary methods of motivation
- Job enrichment
- team work
- praise

Taylor scientific management theory
- money motivates workers
- believed they should be paid piece rate
- Didn’t want them to think for themselves just do what they are told
- jobs are broken down into simple tasks and then best suited conditions would be trained to specialise in that task
- workers will be paid via piece rate
-However would not work in modern society tertiary environment people also expect more

- A sense of recognition is important to employees
- The workplace is a social system and people like to work in groups
- communication with management impacts productivity
- Employees respond to changes in the working environment eg light

Hygiene factors- do not motivate but their absence causes disasifaction
Motivational factors -Does motivate workers
Benefits of Herzbergs theory
- Applies to everybody
- Can work as a checklist
Limitations
- workers may classify factors in different ways. For example, a shop assistant may regard pay as highly motivating
- Some people may be both motivated and demotivated by both factors, for example the environment
- It may be a challenge to enrich and empower unskilled workers
