Autocratic
Paternalistic
Democratic
Laisez-afire
Autocratic
Good for inexperienced or demotivated workers
Has a clear line of control
However is leader dependent
Bad for highly skilled and motivated workers.
Democratic
Focus of power is more with the group as a whole
Leadership functions are shared within the group
Employees have greater involvement in decision making
Emphasis on delegation and consultation, although leader still has final say.
Democratic advantages and disadvantages
+ Works well with skilled employees
+ improves employee motivation
- takes longer
- Depending on the size of the firm could make it impractical
Laissez-afire
Gives employee direction
As a result responsibility lies with the group
Leaders get employees to choose how to complete objectives, make decisions and resolve problems on their own.
Employees have freedom
Laissez-faire advantages and disadvantages
+High Job satisfaction
- Damaging if team members don’t manage time well
- if staff aren’t skilled enough wont work well
