epilepsy
unprovoked recurring seizures in 24 hours
3 main types of seizures
focal (partial), generalized, unknown
focal (partial)
originates in one hemi of brain only, some pt may be aware of environment (cant see but they can hear around them) – smacking of lips or picking one’s clothes
generalized
classic involves both brain hemispheres, grand mal aka motor type– tonic and clonic contraction– alternate, petit mal – absence seizure staring episode talking then stop and look at you
unknown
combo, no known cause, mild symptoms
pseudoseizure
not real but not fake– psychogenic non-epileptic seizure– mental stress can be a cause
post-tactile
after seizure– confused and hard to arouse and may sleep (present reality to patient)
diagnostic for seizures
EEG, MRI
EEG for seizure
can only diagnose if you are having current seizure
correlate the signs and symptoms →
studies have shown that some people with normal EEG may have seizures
and some people with abnormal EEG may not have s/s of seizures
